It's been such a fun journey!<br />

It's been in the works for a couple of years. There are so many elements to it, so many people who have blessed her with ideas and patterns and fabric. Now it is basted and she started on the quilting this past weekend.<br />

These are taken at our basting party a few weeks ago!<br />

Yikes.<br />
<br />
Well, Annie and I have had other things on the burner during this time. First was Thanksgiving and Christmas, and then it was our quilt show. All of that is behind us now and we are looking at our blocks again! <br />
<br />
But I thought I'd put up some pictures of the things we've accomplished on other fronts. So here goes.....<br />
<br />
Annie completed her "Everlasting" quilt in time for our quilt show. It is absolutely lovely. On the label on the back, she has verses that contain the word "everlasting." It's very cool. She's working on something else, too, which will be revealed in due time!<br />
<br />

<br />
I finished my "Sunbonnet Sue" that has been in the works since 1938. (No joke. The story is below.) And I do love it.<br />

<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0.04in; margin-left: 0.6in; margin-right: 0.6in; text-indent: 0.14in;">
Helen Moe (December 8, 1895 – March, 1948) the maternal aunt of my
mother, Winifred Brown Thompson (February 25, 1931 – February 28,
2005) made this quilt as a gift for her when Mom was about 7 years of
age. It was treasured for years, both at home and at our family
cabin in Pinecrest, California. After the sale of the cabin in the
late 1970s, the quilt disappeared for several years, then resurfaced
again in 2006 when I found in in my grandfather's barn. As can be
imagined, it was in great need of cleaning and restoration.</div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0.04in; margin-left: 0.6in; margin-right: 0.6in; text-indent: 0.14in;">
When I took it apart, I discovered that the batting was a flannel
sheet on which old woolen sweaters had been stitched after being
taken apart. One of them had been my uncle's, another my mother's –
very much a product of the Depression.</div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0.04in; margin-left: 0.6in; margin-right: 0.6in; text-indent: 0.14in;">
I soaked the top and backing in Oxi-Clean to remove dirt and stains,
which worked beautifully. The original construction was tied, and had
turned in edges with no binding. The tying had left holes in the top
which I repaired with small pieces cut from the edges of the top and
bottom borders. Some of the appliqued pieces had frayed and the
buttonhole stitching had been lost, so I repaired as many of those as
I could without replacing any of the original fabrics.</div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0.04in; margin-left: 0.6in; margin-right: 0.6in; text-indent: 0.14in;">
After the repair work was finished and the quilt reassembled, I
hand-quilted around each figure and block, and then at the urging of
many of my quilt group friends, cross-hatched the blocks and borders
and used a twisted rope pattern between and around the outside of the
blocks. The only things not original to the quilt are the cotton
batting and the binding, which is a reproduction fabric close in
color to the original 1930s green.</div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0.04in; margin-left: 0.6in; margin-right: 0.6in; text-indent: 0.14in;">
Truly, this has been a labor of love and will be treasured for years
to come.

I've also been working on my son's Log Cabin Star quilt and it's about to be basted. I've used reproduction fabrics for it and I'm so pleased with it. So is my son!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3d7NUHyKXVDKhSUkniRuMexvm6Ve4-TfdwqL_6YAVVwMj8r9kmNvJfWxGgh4nLpZwpV6Gwf9zNPv2Rzyg4QDyQ8oMKsvriRD8PXX1HWj3-Oh5-D00I_D8tQRJVAAwY_UfEGQ1QrkMfbq4/s1600/IMAG3029-1-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3d7NUHyKXVDKhSUkniRuMexvm6Ve4-TfdwqL_6YAVVwMj8r9kmNvJfWxGgh4nLpZwpV6Gwf9zNPv2Rzyg4QDyQ8oMKsvriRD8PXX1HWj3-Oh5-D00I_D8tQRJVAAwY_UfEGQ1QrkMfbq4/s1600/IMAG3029-1-1.jpg" height="400" width="276" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
And I'm doing my first Block of the Month. The Kansas City Star is publishing this one and each block pattern is free for one week each month at<a href="http://www.pickledish.com/" target="_blank"> PickleDish.com</a>. I've downloaded each of them so far, and have completed the first two blocks and am working on the third. I'm using Civil War reproduction fabrics for them, as well. It's called Where Poppies Grow: Remembering Almo. This is my first quilt that includes applique.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Now that our blocks are almost completely finished, we've filled the design wall with them. We think we have a pretty good idea of what we want to do for the layout, sashing, borders, etc. I messed around in Photoshop with pictures of our blocks and tried different background colors, different borders, and so forth. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
My biggest challenge was trying to get the blocks to "pop" and not blend into the sashing and borders. What seems to work the best is to edge each block with a strip that is lighter than any of our other "lights" which separates it from the dark background and from the colors in each block.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Annie had thought that 4-patches would be a good addition at the corners of each block, and I came to agree with her. I added them to the Photoshop layout and it really dressed it up.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So, this is where I think I'm going with mine. Dark blue background, red and taupe 4-patches at the block corners, a red inner border and blue outer border. I like how it makes the blocks "float." Annie is thinking of doing something similar, with a lighter blue for the background.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

So, there's an update on where we are. I think things will slow down even more as we coast into fall here. There is much on our plates with the change in the seasons and the holidays fast approaching. At least they seem to be to me when I look at the list of things I hope to get made before then!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Happy Stitching!</div>

But it has been the one with the most changes!<br />
<br />
Here is the progression:<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
On this one, the blue bothered me.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It just didn't seem to relate well with the rest of the fabrics.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7BY6dU6oS96MyJS155TmZCthvurUft0_AtK6Q4g9tLBzuCPcVjmq-XjB5dhYverPjLjVWIgk2ZLRXePCUwWifq2F-7UMpJbs07Z9EWv6yma8IbtAaE7xe2okec4ww_s_79kWWzjz3EIFl/s1600/Lincolns+Platform+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7BY6dU6oS96MyJS155TmZCthvurUft0_AtK6Q4g9tLBzuCPcVjmq-XjB5dhYverPjLjVWIgk2ZLRXePCUwWifq2F-7UMpJbs07Z9EWv6yma8IbtAaE7xe2okec4ww_s_79kWWzjz3EIFl/s320/Lincolns+Platform+4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So, we changed the blue to this one.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But then the pink began bothering me.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It just didn't go with the rest of the reds in the other blocks.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2ZqyhKaVHTDmk6gQmZ7qwG-H1IdeXmRJHPd4KbKHtxbeOAl5hrle-VsKKOGC5JCe59u6Ma4XMNjcVFAFUviLw85-7z0kRp52uBTz8RhidQ2DfMGVzpAQ4hyD-e_tEOwpzowx-YDp0VgE9/s1600/Lincolns+Platform+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2ZqyhKaVHTDmk6gQmZ7qwG-H1IdeXmRJHPd4KbKHtxbeOAl5hrle-VsKKOGC5JCe59u6Ma4XMNjcVFAFUviLw85-7z0kRp52uBTz8RhidQ2DfMGVzpAQ4hyD-e_tEOwpzowx-YDp0VgE9/s320/Lincolns+Platform+3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So we changed the red to this.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But then there just wasn't enough contrast in the block.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9xQZzR90Ha-tsX59VnHZqXrSZVg3C4cz-3HInuVU-FuI-uZ02oqw7JxJMFkTpYYnxoie8DxGM0VHSzTR11fRpFvgVcb5xue7PuT-IXMaruAp7MhQlhn2k4fHTu4sCWgC1bKWrD2l-vKrc/s1600/Lincolns+Platform+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9xQZzR90Ha-tsX59VnHZqXrSZVg3C4cz-3HInuVU-FuI-uZ02oqw7JxJMFkTpYYnxoie8DxGM0VHSzTR11fRpFvgVcb5xue7PuT-IXMaruAp7MhQlhn2k4fHTu4sCWgC1bKWrD2l-vKrc/s320/Lincolns+Platform+5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So we changed it up and gave it more contrast.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But it still wasn't enough between the red and brown.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmAE7jGnDjMylz7gqEa6BztbeBTrM0dHH2s5zTasiXTEUwWeFFV9gt9s1kzxo6DMRCcZ-V_k8RIao4U9JMNdVDUaIUOq-VoFKc0OnvJqaqTJ8uBJrdAkccTgc2VgyF-tOHirJh5dS2gbcZ/s1600/Lincolns+Platform+6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmAE7jGnDjMylz7gqEa6BztbeBTrM0dHH2s5zTasiXTEUwWeFFV9gt9s1kzxo6DMRCcZ-V_k8RIao4U9JMNdVDUaIUOq-VoFKc0OnvJqaqTJ8uBJrdAkccTgc2VgyF-tOHirJh5dS2gbcZ/s320/Lincolns+Platform+6.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So we did this.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And I think we're going to keep it!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgm6V2RmXJETPbi1qgxc4wL0tNrX0sL2THKNsMfPeyukeXZKnhJDsKtilbCyLboaWhKkd9okRliAbQA6pfpue4ljiUjzC5r0KZNYFtGsEcn2L-a9f1DSllrhJv5CF5JNI_qOS_gjQzn15s1/s1600/Lincolns+Platform+7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgm6V2RmXJETPbi1qgxc4wL0tNrX0sL2THKNsMfPeyukeXZKnhJDsKtilbCyLboaWhKkd9okRliAbQA6pfpue4ljiUjzC5r0KZNYFtGsEcn2L-a9f1DSllrhJv5CF5JNI_qOS_gjQzn15s1/s320/Lincolns+Platform+7.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

We have two more to complete and we'll be finished. Wow! Annie has said all along that she hoped we'd get the blocks completed by the beginning of September, and we just may do it.<br />
<br />
Last weekend was a rough time for me, and one of the things that helps me in times of difficulty is to create. So, I spent quite a bit of time with browns and golds and reds and blues and came up with these, which thankfully Annie likes, too. And just a heads-up here. Annie and I both love a good pinwheel. :-)<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Peace and Plenty</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Pinwheel-Square-in-a-Square-in-a-Square</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Pretty cool. At least we think so!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvm6Hb7_1GvYqHzL1DLcu8H5L0IXpftMFiicuCjcJs3oDnZ2TTfTcUc0afJ8I2xzYtBO5GBptQ1vBVnWDut7LHctKqJu-X0dFbnHILyMLql8jf7oOX_s_yoMBZEjhoG9IGTO50Nq054jIr/s1600/Peace+and+Plenty.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvm6Hb7_1GvYqHzL1DLcu8H5L0IXpftMFiicuCjcJs3oDnZ2TTfTcUc0afJ8I2xzYtBO5GBptQ1vBVnWDut7LHctKqJu-X0dFbnHILyMLql8jf7oOX_s_yoMBZEjhoG9IGTO50Nq054jIr/s400/Peace+and+Plenty.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Yankee Puzzle</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is also a "Broken Dishes" pattern.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The header at the top of the page is a</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Broken Dishes quilt in Civil War reproduction fabrics,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
and you can see the pinwheel-play in it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIZ19hdpnfwznUiQc-DyGyYDEwBlZ2GM4ygzQC-tcLN_jDb5ZTV_LvoIShC8pLeDlfqt0clP6L263NFNEgTJbIIvkf8t01GhqiZd0zClceB1ndE-UI1QvKBaRejKZ73gcmTDQNAkr3XsYg/s1600/Yankee+Puzzle.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIZ19hdpnfwznUiQc-DyGyYDEwBlZ2GM4ygzQC-tcLN_jDb5ZTV_LvoIShC8pLeDlfqt0clP6L263NFNEgTJbIIvkf8t01GhqiZd0zClceB1ndE-UI1QvKBaRejKZ73gcmTDQNAkr3XsYg/s400/Yankee+Puzzle.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Ladies' Aid Album</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The original block just didn't do it for us.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It looked smashed together or something.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjot3A8lER7Wh-cofGJ_5x4speuOmssqyrl4x2CgUbzpYjfiUWiNH0aoqX7kCxK5dUHg2_zAd3EAZgjru62FEPlSmcEOhFfJl4u2Un8Df2oxKnClZgl6w0JDkEAbLhYbQQxsjAwrwqqYBvk/s1600/Ladies'+Aid+Album+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjot3A8lER7Wh-cofGJ_5x4speuOmssqyrl4x2CgUbzpYjfiUWiNH0aoqX7kCxK5dUHg2_zAd3EAZgjru62FEPlSmcEOhFfJl4u2Un8Df2oxKnClZgl6w0JDkEAbLhYbQQxsjAwrwqqYBvk/s400/Ladies'+Aid+Album+1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So this is what we decided would work.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The outer border "light" fabric was replaced with dark blue.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Louisiana</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And these two show the remake of "Louisiana."</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The original red and blue just weren't working for us.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Original</div>

I'm just going to do a few blocks tonight, and hopefully a few more tomorrow.<br />
<br />
We keep thinking we're on our last blocks, and then we decide we need to change some and take away a few, and add in some more. :-) As we're "living with" the blocks on the design wall, we're finding we want to refine it a bit more. So, on we go.<br />
<br />
Since my last post, I've put together the ones I showed in their early stages. We've decided to keep all four the way they are. That's becoming a rarity, we're finding!<br />
<br />
So, here they are.....<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Ohio Star</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I really liked being able to showcase the cool print in the center block.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4sVf7hEs4lJOhyLBoDJ61lwsOqIEbz8xQkp0RlT1L_L2jfxYdNLjUMSpWrxIivjDHHQqXtZX8xZQZdbldjWsdmdR5mv3vdp1H_ZkKscgoovf55QR2fQwyvUdqHxrEkmTHVWjKhz0oXs1Y/s1600/Ohio+Star+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4sVf7hEs4lJOhyLBoDJ61lwsOqIEbz8xQkp0RlT1L_L2jfxYdNLjUMSpWrxIivjDHHQqXtZX8xZQZdbldjWsdmdR5mv3vdp1H_ZkKscgoovf55QR2fQwyvUdqHxrEkmTHVWjKhz0oXs1Y/s320/Ohio+Star+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Apple Tree</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Red and Golden Apples as we head into</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
apple season here in the Northwest!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDxeAk0YhDOoqGvev4uPTy1LK85t_ISLD4EM2uGOik71g5b1nigUsQP8dZXOp-qgCzyvNa0vB28db62DjsX42dBCHj1qqx-0g99ypAYr8chgsRG4DDtHNYZVpy3WVnWEVU9u9L5XmdZn1e/s1600/Apple+Tree+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDxeAk0YhDOoqGvev4uPTy1LK85t_ISLD4EM2uGOik71g5b1nigUsQP8dZXOp-qgCzyvNa0vB28db62DjsX42dBCHj1qqx-0g99ypAYr8chgsRG4DDtHNYZVpy3WVnWEVU9u9L5XmdZn1e/s320/Apple+Tree+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Grapes of Wrath</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was pleased with how the basket came out with fussy-cutting the foulard print.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The print wasn't on-grain, so I had to mess with it a bit.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Christmas Star</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This enabled us to use quite a few greens we like,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
as well as the fun paisley in the outer pieces.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It's a little washed-out in the picture, but it's beautiful.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjquag11AxkGuAApkxm8VMdyt0cJGrna1jgElMxFpVBvy-I6wGfULB4b1MkhLQF9DpnvushyphenhyphenSPfiJGBs3RRd8B6NtzqYBi2vyEzEFty4KXsAaF1QWN4md3I2mElmyOAgjRBsgTn56qBV3cb/s1600/Christmas+Star+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjquag11AxkGuAApkxm8VMdyt0cJGrna1jgElMxFpVBvy-I6wGfULB4b1MkhLQF9DpnvushyphenhyphenSPfiJGBs3RRd8B6NtzqYBi2vyEzEFty4KXsAaF1QWN4md3I2mElmyOAgjRBsgTn56qBV3cb/s320/Christmas+Star+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And Annie has been busy, as well. Here are some of hers that she finished in the past couple of weeks.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Tea Leaf</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The browns are beautiful. I really like this one.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEityUC2G1EOi1oax6LwAG3zpmJlQmCOkl3n-qf18a8okkdFcPafXpgm3SWYofm5uqMxrK3pLJBjyJIcur974hyphenhyphenw9daz7ziSkLbb2WElsxTx1_RVrXcNOzIx_OKF0bLfRB51PgdH3grsoF2q/s1600/Tea+Leaf.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEityUC2G1EOi1oax6LwAG3zpmJlQmCOkl3n-qf18a8okkdFcPafXpgm3SWYofm5uqMxrK3pLJBjyJIcur974hyphenhyphenw9daz7ziSkLbb2WElsxTx1_RVrXcNOzIx_OKF0bLfRB51PgdH3grsoF2q/s320/Tea+Leaf.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Union</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Look at the beautiful points she did!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We find ourselves using this background print a lot.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It's from the General's Wives collection by Nancy Gere from Windham Fabrics.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We happened to ask at a wonderful reproduction fabric shop</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
as to whether she had any of this fabric, and she said,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
"Well, I think I may have some in the back. I've been hoarding it!"</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Voila! She was willing to sell us some and we're so glad she did.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPeQ0UBS0KauQB8YqcdeQ0CMAE8o6_Ri7KXu_bIqk08Ph0GiXgrmIWytMhqnsIjotIysm7W4idZ-hcFCnYjaw0fNuDxkbZqBQJinpSyBPgys2oNj7ZjDEiSxF3fsri_G0LsGt3TN7i642g/s1600/Union.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPeQ0UBS0KauQB8YqcdeQ0CMAE8o6_Ri7KXu_bIqk08Ph0GiXgrmIWytMhqnsIjotIysm7W4idZ-hcFCnYjaw0fNuDxkbZqBQJinpSyBPgys2oNj7ZjDEiSxF3fsri_G0LsGt3TN7i642g/s320/Union.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Railroad Crossing</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This one was supposed to use two different fabrics in the four outer squares,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
but we wanted to use this cool border print instead. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We like how it came out. And the red and brown just look so rich!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiKAUmuvosEGVBUkcZ9zAnEsefa5QZ9Bg3C9oagQOFH_nTU6DnRYgwfC1B35Q5U3fmQKEiDD_TsSIVoCkdz08dTsHjveXqVoamzdQCIiNWizT4v_SrplUHzWknK4fVq10XYMZWNqjydpI1/s1600/Railroad+Crossing.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiKAUmuvosEGVBUkcZ9zAnEsefa5QZ9Bg3C9oagQOFH_nTU6DnRYgwfC1B35Q5U3fmQKEiDD_TsSIVoCkdz08dTsHjveXqVoamzdQCIiNWizT4v_SrplUHzWknK4fVq10XYMZWNqjydpI1/s320/Railroad+Crossing.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So, that's it for now. More to come! We are hoping to have all of our blocks finished by the 1st of September, and it's looking pretty good from here!</div>

It's taken me awhile, but I've finally gotten my last blocks cut out and I took pictures of the "auditions" for each of them. This is the point at which I'm really able to see if I think the block is going to work. I'm pretty pleased with these four. Here they are......<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
First is "Ohio Star," taking it's place in one of the</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
remaining "brown" slots in the block arrangements.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu6q2wC2G3Z8MAhzWyYeOiWTqJ6fvKSw7Q44nFrQZsM1gOk4mHW8rs51hPofHWG6rI0ohCG5BU2BsEa0vT4-8Zp4zY49jmgmfGCb_HFkvuu-4QYreGP2BdHYyidEuvPwtK_XwB7llmmmEy/s1600/Ohio+Star.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu6q2wC2G3Z8MAhzWyYeOiWTqJ6fvKSw7Q44nFrQZsM1gOk4mHW8rs51hPofHWG6rI0ohCG5BU2BsEa0vT4-8Zp4zY49jmgmfGCb_HFkvuu-4QYreGP2BdHYyidEuvPwtK_XwB7llmmmEy/s400/Ohio+Star.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Second is "Apple Tree," also filling a "brown" slot.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhldSNDezpipszyJms0o1l1jq9_kQa96lufkcz72jiUXhoxFNDc-BeUKQowgL1hAuSXWuR6rPBDGImwmhMYak3-d54db7_QtRotfUkbCgeHFBnyLkwLsYXCkfS_xOdNlAPtA6uWJa5XrW2F/s1600/Apple+Tree.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="207" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhldSNDezpipszyJms0o1l1jq9_kQa96lufkcz72jiUXhoxFNDc-BeUKQowgL1hAuSXWuR6rPBDGImwmhMYak3-d54db7_QtRotfUkbCgeHFBnyLkwLsYXCkfS_xOdNlAPtA6uWJa5XrW2F/s400/Apple+Tree.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Third is "Grapes of Wrath," which is our remaining "primarily blue with some brown" block.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4FFTailedxsI5PEtFY8oIytwu0hwrs6d6uYeNDX9jvMXdO8UtArTtb1h0XSZk44U5XY6_h1l8SXXC9uU1hSKUBh4migURE4VRvn7O3IjhrgUue-ORiM2igw5XZJkVmO2wMxS2pGkI23-3/s1600/Grapes+of+Wrath.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4FFTailedxsI5PEtFY8oIytwu0hwrs6d6uYeNDX9jvMXdO8UtArTtb1h0XSZk44U5XY6_h1l8SXXC9uU1hSKUBh4migURE4VRvn7O3IjhrgUue-ORiM2igw5XZJkVmO2wMxS2pGkI23-3/s400/Grapes+of+Wrath.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Fourth is "Christmas Star," and it's our final green and gold block.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkEiyFOnNS2wcvBLA74BQCb0BYHzS3PH2RK_Ifgooq4lRq_4M_dWHdXbclYIQe-DQAMBAEHfcowhD2ypd3mi6RIPpk7v8rOHAzd6JZ5bJ7f-ru1z_y6_m2VWRnfzK22B1Rh1r2CyhOvH5D/s1600/Christmas+Star.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkEiyFOnNS2wcvBLA74BQCb0BYHzS3PH2RK_Ifgooq4lRq_4M_dWHdXbclYIQe-DQAMBAEHfcowhD2ypd3mi6RIPpk7v8rOHAzd6JZ5bJ7f-ru1z_y6_m2VWRnfzK22B1Rh1r2CyhOvH5D/s400/Christmas+Star.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Getting pretty close here!!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We also went shopping to fill in some of the gaps we had in our lights and darks for the sashing. Nine-patch and Rails is the theme, and we have some fun pieces to work with from the leftover fabrics of our blocks, as well as a few new ones that coordinate well with the overall feel of the quilt. More pictures to come!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

We were able to get through the final planning of the color placement of the blocks on the quilt top. We figured where we wanted each of the main colors and then decided which of our remaining blocks should carry the colors we still needed. I drafted it out and we played with it from there.<br />

We have ten more to complete and then we'll be ready to start on the sashing!<br />
<br />
As I mentioned in an earlier post, there were some changes in the wind for some of our existing blocks. Here they are:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Above (before) and right (after), and yes it is the same block pattern! Isn't it amazing how color choices can entirely change the look of a block?!?<br />
<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's how it looks with the rotated center block.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
I decided to change my "London Square,"</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
and Annie is still deciding what she wants to do.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We discovered an interesting thing when we went to Tillamook last week</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
and viewed part of the antique quilt collection at the <a href="http://latimerquiltandtextile.com/" target="_blank">Latimer Quilt and Textile Center</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Apparently pinks didn't really come into use until the 1880s.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So. I feel good about ousting the pink in this block</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<br />
Here are a few of those we've done.<br />
<br />
Quite awhile ago Annie made "Little Blue Basket," but I didn't have a picture of it to post. We've decided that the background needs to be darker, so these will be remade with a sweet floral-on-taupe to replace the white and blue print. I love baskets! Pics of the changes to come later.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9VG_7LqW7WVmsDea2NcIfRee9Fgj58nFT4_y0vm5mRlTZMvxxvSyu3i5C6I3Y2O1XOcKteXTrzyFGex4TLROQj5eNQazXO7FIRsnKVue7YGdg0XSAf5IS5sFw7J0AOydSYoqCJBBjP54b/s1600/Basket.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9VG_7LqW7WVmsDea2NcIfRee9Fgj58nFT4_y0vm5mRlTZMvxxvSyu3i5C6I3Y2O1XOcKteXTrzyFGex4TLROQj5eNQazXO7FIRsnKVue7YGdg0XSAf5IS5sFw7J0AOydSYoqCJBBjP54b/s400/Basket.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Annie also made this lovely "Underground Railroad" block. We're trying to evenly disperse a variety of colors over the quilt tops, and this is one of our attempts to get some green -- and gold -- into the mix.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPlDrq3VRsfrQKrkG1x5SjKIyREc26XqdXw3vkOcOtGG6Zbt5HHfNdjOyhAX6z__iqKewyccKB9tL9K4TRDmYVMfIyn_354luH101IKx81uOxFWWFZDHzVv1yq0y79FLSRVVBW9ulo2FbS/s1600/Underground+Railroad.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="395" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPlDrq3VRsfrQKrkG1x5SjKIyREc26XqdXw3vkOcOtGG6Zbt5HHfNdjOyhAX6z__iqKewyccKB9tL9K4TRDmYVMfIyn_354luH101IKx81uOxFWWFZDHzVv1yq0y79FLSRVVBW9ulo2FbS/s400/Underground+Railroad.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
And here's another green and gold one that I made. Its name is "Carolina Lily."<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwlmOBlCKf_Ei9o8x93BzOOypVrVWIx09WOOrmItj68rJkzXmsP0-f71hO9l1UjoLi4cs79BN4Y_5KhD8MvVnH5qQdYbMKlNPyS71ZS46z6IEDtcayjJDMQ4ILRZt8mU_probtle5KGhkO/s1600/Carolina+Lily.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwlmOBlCKf_Ei9o8x93BzOOypVrVWIx09WOOrmItj68rJkzXmsP0-f71hO9l1UjoLi4cs79BN4Y_5KhD8MvVnH5qQdYbMKlNPyS71ZS46z6IEDtcayjJDMQ4ILRZt8mU_probtle5KGhkO/s400/Carolina+Lily.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
Here is "Rosebud," another attempt at green, but it isn't working for us, so changes are in the wind for this one. I'll post the updated version when we've settled on it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNuhnLpNUWGuQ2G52Kyvjckqxm8p9kyfYLV5vyqo3iRH1EOoYluRZPoFF1G9N_ao8G48DgaRElTRj8MCavOXzSF07DSxtdsGcRO6Mm1B_kz9Ews1r04ymxKNJJXgu3FkLv3y7mrurCgfLu/s1600/Rosebud+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNuhnLpNUWGuQ2G52Kyvjckqxm8p9kyfYLV5vyqo3iRH1EOoYluRZPoFF1G9N_ao8G48DgaRElTRj8MCavOXzSF07DSxtdsGcRO6Mm1B_kz9Ews1r04ymxKNJJXgu3FkLv3y7mrurCgfLu/s320/Rosebud+1.jpg" width="317" /></a></div>
<br />
This is a fun one. Its name is "West Virginia" and Annie made it with this awesome print in the center block that shows encamped Union troops surrounded by Scripture verses and song lyrics. In this case, Psalms 46:1 & 50:15 and <i>Rally Round the Flag Boys. </i> After we put it on the design wall, we realized the center needs to be shifted 45 degrees so it will sit straight when the blocks are set on point. :-) So, we have more ripping and re-sewing to do. Just part of the process, right? But don't you just love the colors here? That red and brown combination is rich.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEzIrKfHgmX0P4NKnxqw92JA7NTp7Gwzi3tMW8jJmByzUn-rFIHqTUh7y2d2Jij45JYew0PCmzipFqxflbx5ImDfUM5lAhJ_mCpTwydHFSvn5f1begme8nLhlmdxslXwHl-sSetkb01a45/s1600/West+Virginia.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="306" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEzIrKfHgmX0P4NKnxqw92JA7NTp7Gwzi3tMW8jJmByzUn-rFIHqTUh7y2d2Jij45JYew0PCmzipFqxflbx5ImDfUM5lAhJ_mCpTwydHFSvn5f1begme8nLhlmdxslXwHl-sSetkb01a45/s320/West+Virginia.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
And then I reworked "Lincoln's Platform" because I wasn't satisfied with how the colors worked together. In my opinion, the blue was too bright and didn't match the value of the rose color. So here is the result of that change. I can live with it now.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Before</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjA5DU6K20VYKE8Eo_O7hcfruALu0bEfOzjbnjEAvcu09zjuiJqq9EDp70ZmN09EOkS9TpGtrL6KZ-fd6l38C2uRT7veZlFa_C9TZwi4D440KFhyphenhyphenKFd0RZnuobp2-wdjd9eJSxI_eZ2MKgv/s1600/Lincolns+Platform+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="315" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjA5DU6K20VYKE8Eo_O7hcfruALu0bEfOzjbnjEAvcu09zjuiJqq9EDp70ZmN09EOkS9TpGtrL6KZ-fd6l38C2uRT7veZlFa_C9TZwi4D440KFhyphenhyphenKFd0RZnuobp2-wdjd9eJSxI_eZ2MKgv/s320/Lincolns+Platform+4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
After</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjn7S6J0EduRkO0YiRB1pm76bV21EMchdddjc-CtE-me_UCxHmHVKlxdNr_dOvrK1bT8y24h5QNOm4SNkl4C50AsIgmHSkR-sMFwhv6caNHXRZbfxC527vry1gVmK2d3CoKCJBMXv8S1uYw/s1600/Lincolns+Platform+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjn7S6J0EduRkO0YiRB1pm76bV21EMchdddjc-CtE-me_UCxHmHVKlxdNr_dOvrK1bT8y24h5QNOm4SNkl4C50AsIgmHSkR-sMFwhv6caNHXRZbfxC527vry1gVmK2d3CoKCJBMXv8S1uYw/s320/Lincolns+Platform+3.jpg" width="318" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's a look at the design wall that shows the blocks we have so far. I've done a little preliminary figuring on where which colors might abide to best advantage. I love living with a block arrangement for weeks, walking by it, sitting and just absorbing what is there. My eyes are constantly roving over the placements and trying to see the "best" way to arrange them. So, here's the beginning. There will be many changes before we're finished, to be sure.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCPEJFSvMYGReWsLyQ9eSmOWFETjq4qkX2IjGEKgw7eAnBjhrCuoH5VA9VjtmfPegLHKfD6MzwwP4FjYlk6hF5iGdf6jfTD7Qy_bNi5WGOJJjMeF_x0j9Gcp_fTZaTP7qAyoreGSpqyYg4/s1600/Design+Wall+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCPEJFSvMYGReWsLyQ9eSmOWFETjq4qkX2IjGEKgw7eAnBjhrCuoH5VA9VjtmfPegLHKfD6MzwwP4FjYlk6hF5iGdf6jfTD7Qy_bNi5WGOJJjMeF_x0j9Gcp_fTZaTP7qAyoreGSpqyYg4/s400/Design+Wall+3.jpg" width="296" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
We have a work day scheduled tomorrow, so hopefully I'll get more posted soon!<br />

We found ourselves at our local quilt shop with a 20% discount card and a gift certificate. We've discovered we need some darker lights. The shirtings we have are turning out to be too light to our liking, so after experimenting some with some of Jo Morton's fabric that we already had, we decided we needed to find some fabrics with similar values. Bingo! And we found a few other things, too, that we think are pretty awesome. Here are the newest additions. I truly wish the photo did them justice!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqjmI_OVKOpwEiPZkc6-KlQZeqdKT04aCsYlQ8E0a6DFBZnchh0OzYjHwgYsVXFTCWoETGlRHEK5f1u0OZlsEfrYKsx-fB4i5H1eYNABPRPkW41gguXlnT8xAWJc0TNk6-ra235E3_h3pn/s1600/New+Fabrics.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="343" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqjmI_OVKOpwEiPZkc6-KlQZeqdKT04aCsYlQ8E0a6DFBZnchh0OzYjHwgYsVXFTCWoETGlRHEK5f1u0OZlsEfrYKsx-fB4i5H1eYNABPRPkW41gguXlnT8xAWJc0TNk6-ra235E3_h3pn/s400/New+Fabrics.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
After our foray into the land of fabrics -- on a Shop Hop day, no less -- we had a good afternoon cutting out, revising some more, and sewing some blocks. This is the newest block for our collection, the Barbara Frietchie Star.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRzhnrOB2RzX4i3T7OF0nq1BFgnpN8yDeLPljveZm7luY5SvDAMl-l7x7gSaHG_h9spwr6HN_OQZhr4gMHer3wt2kZ8aEY0VYM7CGtTQleVu7GzWSOyvidUKDMN3y4aaYCs4cSDyZCrSS3/s1600/Barbara+Freitchie+Beginnings.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="238" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRzhnrOB2RzX4i3T7OF0nq1BFgnpN8yDeLPljveZm7luY5SvDAMl-l7x7gSaHG_h9spwr6HN_OQZhr4gMHer3wt2kZ8aEY0VYM7CGtTQleVu7GzWSOyvidUKDMN3y4aaYCs4cSDyZCrSS3/s400/Barbara+Freitchie+Beginnings.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Here's the layout......<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

One is as we planned it, the second is a revision. And the design wall is sporting the changes. I'm pretty pleased at this point. :-)<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMW5pR8S-80qv-Q_HBnSbY6XsZWps1DYL90TeVZzYe3RXES6hSlGf_B9nuwpdn0GTa4U6jUHtWtNongH7O3StLua2L4bgi4FUKdY_J-IGorn2tyUOI7Z8nI36qZsxWX6AlpKqT5rymhTGE/s1600/Union+Square+Beginnings.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; display: inline !important; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMW5pR8S-80qv-Q_HBnSbY6XsZWps1DYL90TeVZzYe3RXES6hSlGf_B9nuwpdn0GTa4U6jUHtWtNongH7O3StLua2L4bgi4FUKdY_J-IGorn2tyUOI7Z8nI36qZsxWX6AlpKqT5rymhTGE/s400/Union+Square+Beginnings.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />

This is Union Square in the planning stages........<br />

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
....and finished. The blue is hard to capture in a picture......</div>

This is more true to color.</div>
<div style="text-align: right;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: right;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And then this is the revision of the New England block:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi220SdLbPa8P-4obmArATnG2l-UtH1UIsbJEYTjW9Mh8GQwH48s_EjftRDJEoKmbr2zSr2m6co6r_r022ef7wxq7To351NSCADTW71JTsPsr12w99Xp-x4PbcPQB3UAwn-44vBJ_EUcwNR/s1600/New+England+Revised+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi220SdLbPa8P-4obmArATnG2l-UtH1UIsbJEYTjW9Mh8GQwH48s_EjftRDJEoKmbr2zSr2m6co6r_r022ef7wxq7To351NSCADTW71JTsPsr12w99Xp-x4PbcPQB3UAwn-44vBJ_EUcwNR/s400/New+England+Revised+2.jpg" width="397" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And the design wall with the tea-dyed squares and the revisions:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5J1k3snVML4omdLwaCvI3hG-VCEEn7VUoUxNBQsRLX1p6CiRBJJAGwelTBjJ_t5x76SNSw1EXrYwUu8xN2ac1X0GjFT7M9FNp6Ib9pHNSgOmw6HMqI9Pr-a143joH31ILoUrHFXnNPLCO/s1600/Design+Wall+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="315" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5J1k3snVML4omdLwaCvI3hG-VCEEn7VUoUxNBQsRLX1p6CiRBJJAGwelTBjJ_t5x76SNSw1EXrYwUu8xN2ac1X0GjFT7M9FNp6Ib9pHNSgOmw6HMqI9Pr-a143joH31ILoUrHFXnNPLCO/s400/Design+Wall+2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
So, onward to the next blocks. There are still a couple in this grouping that need some changes. Maybe we'll tackle that tomorrow!<br />
<br />
<br />Debbiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12208678556582065607noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7042230730369533584.post-88393142821669913682013-06-12T17:43:00.000-07:002013-06-19T20:35:26.207-07:00Revisions and Tea Dying!In talking about our project recently, we've both come to the conclusion that the full set of blocks is just going to be too much of a quilt for us. Annie came to that place long before I did. I was gung-ho on doing all the blocks, with a few exceptions. But if I did, I'd have a king-size quilt, which I don't really want to handle at the quilting stage. So I'd thought about doing two smaller ones. Today I decided I'm doing just one, like Annie is, and both of ours will be 31 blocks. <br />
<br />
So, we went through our pattern books and decided which 31 they would be.<br />
<br />
Helping us make the decisions is the realization that we prefer the more complex blocks, so we're focusing on those. Also that we're just going to bypass all the applique patterns with the exception of the Little Blue Basket, which has an applique handle.<br />
<br />
After that, we put all of our blocks up on the design wall. I find living with block arrangements over time is the most useful thing in deciding if I like what I'm doing. I am blessed to have a great place for a design wall, and a family that likes to see the progress of each quilt I make. So, as we looked at what we have going here, there were some things that stood out.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMrKHFF2hbSZfZVQtjMSsEB7tPmVRfYQkyxve_M375qV-HzTE7K-YUpD04X7uTDsfSfG49kk1gjFOG-PTqFvYhPj0e-UbEYdsTqt4ExieUX56Db9Qlyb1kcRGBVO0GiAklBGabbM4TVHlN/s1600/Design+Wall.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="301" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMrKHFF2hbSZfZVQtjMSsEB7tPmVRfYQkyxve_M375qV-HzTE7K-YUpD04X7uTDsfSfG49kk1gjFOG-PTqFvYhPj0e-UbEYdsTqt4ExieUX56Db9Qlyb1kcRGBVO0GiAklBGabbM4TVHlN/s400/Design+Wall.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First thing we decided is that we really prefer the darker shades of lights, so pulled the North Star block (left side, row 4, because it just sticks out too much.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then we did some tea dying on Texas Tears, Birds in the Air and Comfort Quilt Blocks (all of row 3). We like the result much better now.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then we pulled the Illinois Road block, bottom left, because we're struggling with the pink that just doesn't blend as much as we'd like.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The rest of the day, we spent evaluating the other blocks we have cut out and whether we want to substitute new lights. And we made good progress on that, as well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's one we've changed and like it so much better. It's called New England and the first attempt is the top one. Revision is below. We tea dyed that center piece. :-)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiC3MA468QPbJqje2VNp28JG_knuH6DlkciRnVHX9KceNZTsptv0eDucP5Dig-_sspXxSU1l5d3bQd1OIYuWiez0q-JoAk0_IODuLq3FzljIpJ7oW_wjCqUpsamVFajAWcjRj9_kT0iFEPA/s1600/First+New+England.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="292" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiC3MA468QPbJqje2VNp28JG_knuH6DlkciRnVHX9KceNZTsptv0eDucP5Dig-_sspXxSU1l5d3bQd1OIYuWiez0q-JoAk0_IODuLq3FzljIpJ7oW_wjCqUpsamVFajAWcjRj9_kT0iFEPA/s400/First+New+England.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLtnih2kvlGe0tydg1Vv2HdMo5gs27VxMwkSXXXM4_QSHHas0_YCBEnjJQ2-0AhaE36lcwPGeP1AGG0vrCWoAlnhAfbAmZ1QwGwhQUw10D2zHHHsLcH2g6C2zsvB_pegdApGlv2KzRRG_m/s1600/New+England+New.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="285" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLtnih2kvlGe0tydg1Vv2HdMo5gs27VxMwkSXXXM4_QSHHas0_YCBEnjJQ2-0AhaE36lcwPGeP1AGG0vrCWoAlnhAfbAmZ1QwGwhQUw10D2zHHHsLcH2g6C2zsvB_pegdApGlv2KzRRG_m/s400/New+England+New.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So, revised design wall coming in the near future!</div>

As days go, it was a 10. We each were able to complete 3 blocks, had good talks throughout the day, and a good supper together. I love the way God gives us sisters in His kingdom. Quilting sisters are just that much dearer.<br />
<br />
So, these are the blocks that Annie finished.........<br />

The fabric samples you see clipped to the pattern pages are the beginnings of my recording system to catalog the fabrics we end up using in these quilts. I was reading on <a href="http://barbarabrackman.blogspot.com/2013/04/modas-mill-book-series-collections-for.html" target="_blank">Barbara Brackman's Material Culture</a> blog once about how the fabric companies kept "Mill Books" to document their fabrics. I thought that sounded like a good idea. A little fabric history for posterity.<br />

There are 60-some total between the blog patterns and the book. So, we went through and numbered them according to the blog posts, then added the additional 10 from the book. Annie has the odd-numbered blocks, and I'm doing the even-numbered ones. <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So, our first work day consisted of us figuring out the fabric choices for several of our blocks. I love the process! With such lovely fabrics to work with, we're feeling pretty confident that the end result will be something we'll love.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This is the first block pattern I finished. It's "North Star."</div>

And this is the first block pattern Annie finished. It's "Missouri Star." At this point, it's our favorite.</div>

We love fabric. We love quilting. We love that they all go together!<br />
<br />
When we see quilts from the Civil War era, we are amazed and awed.<br />
<br />
When we see Civil War reproduction fabrics, we smile. And we buy them.<br />
Too often...... :-)<br />
<br />
So, more than a decade ago, Annie's quilt group, with which I was not yet familiar, embarked on a group project making a Broken Dishes pattern using Civil War reproduction fabrics. Some of the blocks were orphaned and ended up in a bag in her stash. Last summer she gave them to me and I turned them into this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJr7RqmReacC0AjZllzkA_D3lnC0-wZa2ndJPw7cphYfh07a4HDYIPnqo49EqFzu9mJGJnTYRIlxv_aMchsTzWIpEfGL_M5yMKZBNPG_igQxVcxPWXdxVKsTuiLksalKj880cNxVt03LZu/s1600/Broken+Dishes.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJr7RqmReacC0AjZllzkA_D3lnC0-wZa2ndJPw7cphYfh07a4HDYIPnqo49EqFzu9mJGJnTYRIlxv_aMchsTzWIpEfGL_M5yMKZBNPG_igQxVcxPWXdxVKsTuiLksalKj880cNxVt03LZu/s400/Broken+Dishes.jpg" width="351" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
There are 6 original blocks, then several that were taken apart and put back together in different color combinations, and then there are many that were made new from fabrics from both Annie's stash and mine.<br />
<br />
From there we began sharing books and blogs and Wednesday afternoons, and came upon Barbara Brackman's <i><a href="http://www.ctpub.com/productdetails.cfm?PC=2743">Civil War Sampler</a></i>. At first, I wasn't too impressed with the blocks in the book because the colorways were not often to my taste, but Annie saw beyond the block pictures to Becky Brown's finished quilt that is pictured in the book. Beautiful!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjS6SPVSV0h2jRCBsT_ruR7aNlU2a2pCiRhMJvQmuIjNbr4txeFY3jENnEYmyvVyg0OuNFYTv6abDtAPliO9yDotu7-UNMm6jB6UNrnBt8wHCt0tB2tDJKiMayzc-kcvhf8F8K-n9OSFCC3/s1600/Becky+Brown's+Quilt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjS6SPVSV0h2jRCBsT_ruR7aNlU2a2pCiRhMJvQmuIjNbr4txeFY3jENnEYmyvVyg0OuNFYTv6abDtAPliO9yDotu7-UNMm6jB6UNrnBt8wHCt0tB2tDJKiMayzc-kcvhf8F8K-n9OSFCC3/s400/Becky+Brown's+Quilt.jpg" width="322" /></a></div>
<br />
She suggested making it as a group project with our quilt group. The idea lasted about a week, at which point we realized it would be akin to tearing our hair out to organize such a feat. So, she suggested we just do it ourselves. Well, then.<br />
<br />
So, we decided to focus on Barbara's <a href="http://www.unitednotions.com/fcc_metropolitan_fair.pdf">Metropolitan Fair</a> fabric line, purchased a fat-quarter bundle of the whole collection (something neither of us had EVER done! Woo Hoo!!), and we were in motion. I put together pattern sets for each of us and we put them in binders, bought a couple of pretty boxes for our fabric stashes specifically for this quilt, and started in.<br />
<br />
What a fun ride it is turning out to be!<br />
